Great post Laurin! There are many tricky aspects to timber design, would be great to see more posts like this, with clear articulation of the design process. What are your preferred timber design tools and resources? I use the Wood Design Manual by the Canadian Wood Council. https://webstore.cwc.ca/product/wood-design-manual-2020/

Thanks for your great feedback and the book recommendation. I’ll keep in mind to write more detailed timber design guides.👍👍

For the design of timber beams I use Polybeam which is a super easy beam analysis software with great documentation. It designs timber beams also according to Eurocode. For frames and bigger structures I use Robot to calculate the internal forces. Mathcad for the design. Here in Denmark we have great web application which designs the connectors. So for all the verifications I did manually in the post, I usually use software for. But I think it’s crucial to know how the formulas work.

Cool, I have been intrigued by Robot for a while now but have not used it. Usually I will model things in Revit and verify frames/solids in SAP2000 but Robot might present a smoother workflow. There's an opportunity cost in learning new tools, so I'm typically quite cautious! Thanks for the book link, will check it out!
