Interesting post! I've been curious about rhino but I currently use Revit for my 3d models. I was considering switching to blender to avoid vendor lock-in. I like the open source nature of it but not sure if it could legitimately be used for structural modelling. Rhino and Revit are established industry standards by now.
Yes i also use Revit if I have to model some basic structures (walls, slabs, columns, reinforcement, etc.). In bigger projects I do quick sketches in Bluebeam and send them further to the drafter which will then do the 3d model and drawings in Revit.
Rhino is great for more complex 3d connections or elements.
2 examples where I used it:
1. Visualization of a suspended ceiling system which I then used to explain the system, spacing, etc. to the builder.
2. Steel connections between 2 inclined timber beams. Whenever you work in multiple planes Revit makes problems from my experience.
Very interesting! I am definitely following the journey of Blender and BlenderBIM. I also love the idea that itβs open-source and free. However from the updates and videos Iβve seen, I think itβs still a long way to go. But would be great to hear from somebody who is using it in structural design.
